The Lies We Were Told About Great Teaching

The Lies We Were Told About Great Teaching image

We’ve all heard the myths

  • “Just follow the textbook.”
  • “Keep them quiet and everything will be fine.”
  • “Great teachers know everything.”
  • “Don’t smile until second term.”

Yet, the moment you step into a real classroom, you quickly learn none of it holds up.

You can have the perfect lesson plan, but still watch students stare blankly. You may be good at your subject, and still struggle to reach that one learner the back. Great teaching isn’t about control, knowing it all, or sticking to the script.

The truth? Great teaching is messy. It is human. It is built on connection.

It is found in small, powerful moments, a shy student finally raising their hand, a sudden burst of laughter on a hard day, a question that shows they’re thinking deeper than you expected.

The most effective teachers aren’t magicians. They are enthusiastic learners, perfect communicators, patient listeners, and heroes of every child in their class. They adapt when situations require, stay cool even at a tough moment, and deeply concerned about their learner, rather than their grades.

Great teachers are effective at communication, plan with intention to cause an effect, and listen patiently but actively. They manage their class with respect, not fear. They master their subject deeply, but they also know how to explain it just simply. They don’t teach content, they teach and inspire; confidence, curiosity, and compassion.

And most importantly, great teachers never stop learning. They are constantly growing, refining their craft, and finding better ways to reach each learner specially and every day.

So the next time someone tells you teaching is about keeping order or sticking to the textbook, smile. Then go ahead and break the rules. Because real teaching is so much more than what we were told.

It is connection. It is growth. It is impact.

And that is the kind of teaching that truly changes lives.
