WEAK INTRODUCTIONS ARE RUINING EVERY LESSON YOU TEACH

Teaching, like any other kind of work, requires quality planning. However, it is not the presence of a plan that matters but how you plan that determines the quality of teaching.

An introductory phase, being the first phase in a lesson, is very important to critically understand what is done in the phase, how and why for effective planning and implementation. Like in any other phases, during the introductory phase, teacher’s creativity is highly needed to achieve the daily mission.

If well handled, it gives clear indicators of how deep the given content will be conceptualized by learners. It should be beyond making learners listen but also doing. Meaningful simple activities should be given to learners depending on the content and teacher’s creativity.

Activities like drawing, naming, briefly talking about the importance of something, observing and telling, and doing according to teacher’s instructions are among the activities which are expected to be given to learners depending on the class level. This is intended to prepare the three domains to be ready to perform excellently.

Teacher’s creativity to think in line with learner’s minds creates a better atmosphere for deeper understanding. The introductory phase should prepare the learner for the lesson. It should also stimulate and motivate the learner to learn the prepared content.

Furthermore, it should enable the learner to understand the relevancy of learning the prepared content. In addition, it should be able to cultivate critical thinking in line with the prepared content.

However, some teachers, instead of carrying out lesson introduction, address learners, leading to boredom at the beginning of the lesson. In general, poor introduction lowers the quality of instruction since the intended outcomes are not achieved.

Therefore, teachers should draw their attention to understand what is meant to be done for quality instruction.
