From Primary One to Primary Seven is a journey of seven years, a journey through which a learner is shaped, guided, and prepared for the Primary Leaving Examinations (PLE). A school with a clear, result-oriented system will have taken a learner through every stage of this academic scope with the expectation of excellent results at the end.

However, it is important to remember that a learner is still a child, not a short adult. In the final stretch, a teacher’s gentle and strategic touch matters more than ever.

Unfortunately, during these last weeks, many Primary Seven teachers become overly aggressive and results-driven, often due to pressure from parents, administrators, and the public. This intense focus on tests and corrections sometimes leaves little room for other crucial aspects of readiness.

As we approach the final days before PLE, teachers should take a holistic approach, one that balances academics with emotional, physical, and mental well-being. Here are some key areas to consider:

STRATEGIC STUDY

  • Avoid cramming. Instead, encourage interactive learning where learners explain concepts in their own words. This strengthens understanding and reduces exam anxiety.

REALISTIC SCHEDULES

  • Keep sessions short but purposeful. Allow regular breaks so learners remain alert and motivated. Burnout serves no one, not even the most determined pupil.

PRIORITISE PHYSICAL HEALTH

  • Ensure learners get adequate rest, eat healthy meals, and stay active through light exercises. A healthy body supports a focused mind.

SOMETHING TO LOOK FORWARD TO

  • Motivation fuels endurance. Promise a fun activity or a simple reward after exams. It gives learners something to look forward to and helps them stay engaged.

A POSITIVE MINDSET

  • Encourage self-talk and confidence-building affirmations:
  • Yes, I can.
  • No, I won’t give up.
  • I am better than this.

HYDRATION MATTERS

  • Remind learners to eat well but also to drink enough water. Hydration improves concentration and energy levels.

FOOD FOR THE EAR

  • In these final moments, words carry power. Speak to inspire. Speak to motivate. Speak to ignite desire. Avoid language that weakens or discourages.

In these last days, let us be kind, patient, precise, and calm. Our learners need not just lessons, but the reassurance that they can and will succeed.
